Diego Godín is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time. He began his European career in Spain with Villarreal before making a defining move to Atlético Madrid in 2010, where he became the cornerstone of one of the most formidable defences in world football under Diego Simeone. During his time at Atlético, Godín captained the side and played a crucial role in their La Liga triumph in 2013–14, as well as reaching two UEFA Champions League finals. At international level, he was a legendary figure for Uruguay, captaining the national team for many years and leading them to Copa América success in 2011 while becoming one of the most capped players in the country’s history with 161 Caps.
